The trustees are pleased to receive applications for awards to support research into figurative painting or traditional craft, the two focus areas of interest for the Golden Fleece Award.
In place of the two 500 word statements required of artist applicants (Statement of Need and Statement of Artistic Vision), research applicants should submit a single statement of up to 1000 words. This Research Statement should cover the following points:
Aims, objectives and overall significance of the research:
What has aroused your interest in the research topic, and why do you believe it to be important that the research gets done? In what way will your research contribute to knowledge and/ or to practice in figurative painting and/ or of traditional craft?
Expected audience for the research:
Will the research be of benefit/ interest mainly to an academic research community? Will it be of wider interest, e.g. to educators and/or to artists and craftspeople themselves?
Proposed research methods and timescale:
Will the research involve desk work in libraries and archives? Will the research involve interaction and documentation activity with living artists and craftspeople? On what scale will the research be carried out, and over what period of time? How much time will be spent collecting information, how much time analysing your material, how much time compiling your reports and outputs?
Proposed outputs and dissemination methods:
The Trustees will expect to see firm and realistic plans for publication of the research, which could take a variety of forms. Will your research lead to production of a book or monograph? Of one or more journal articles? If so do you have a publisher/ a journal already in mind, and can you show that you can meet their requirements? Alternatively will your research be presented through some form of electronic or multimedia publication – a DVD, a website, a documentary film? In this case, how will the electronic publication be put together and where will it be hosted?
Outline of financial needs and proposed budget:
All awards are likely to fall between €2,000 and €10,000, and research applicants should include a realistic budget within this bracket. Allowable costs could include e.g. payments for research assistance; payment of necessary travel expenses; support for production costs of a research publication; support for DVD production/ website development.
