Project

I am due back from a 5 year career break from art teaching in a local secondary school. During these years I had very little time to develop artistically, however in the last 12 months I have started to produce more and more work. I feel I am at last on an artistic roll and have found the medium that really works for me. The award would enable me to develop as a batik artist while continuing to work part time at my job which I love. It would also enable me to equip myself better for my art.

Artistic Vision

I am passionate about batik and the batik process although I rarely see a batik I like. Apart from traditional and ethnic batiks I often find contemporary work over representational and overworked. Coming from a painting background I would like to explore large areas of flat colour and complement them with pattern, traditional stamping, detailed djanting, natural and forced cracking and painterly brushstrokes. The possibilities are infinite and I am only beginning to scratch the surface
