Derek McGarry's focus is primarily on metals and metalworking technology. He uses mxed media (tools, utensils, processes, and scientific instruments) to create pieces that are "a personal metaphor for issues reflecting loss, vulnerability, and the inner strength of the human condition".

He was the driving force behind the Influence - Contemporary metals and jewellery exhibition at Collins Barracks Museum in 2004 at which he was also a major exhibitor.
Funding would enable him to acquire knowledge, materials and equipment that would help him to expand his explorations of ways of harnessing "selective industrial technology from the past, present and future for the purpose of craft studio adaptation and practice".
