Genevieve Howard

Genevieve Howard graduated from the National College of Art and Design, Dublin with a BA in Metals + Jewellery in 2015, studied Jewellery Design, Gold and Silversmithing at the Royal Academy of Fine Arts, Antwerp, and completed an MA in Fashion + Technology at the University of Art and Industrial Design, Linz in 2021. She is a Dublin-based designer and maker of contemporary art jewellery and sculptural objects.

The possibilities of making the intangible tangible and visualising the unseen has always been the conceptual driving force within her practice, which is rooted in her background as a musician and singer. Music and sound exist as waves and vibrations through air, and in recent work she has explored how the human voice can be used as a tool to render visible the individuality of a person within a material and to further generate bespoke design. Using an augmented anodizing process – an electrochemical process whereby certain reactive metals, such as titanium and niobium, change colour when charged with electricity – she has developed a new technology that enables her to reveal certain colours on the metal’s surface based on the unique frequency of individual human voices. Combining technologies such as water-jet and laser cutting with handcrafted techniques, the voices' colours and shapes are synthesised and transcribed into final wearable forms.

Genevieve Howard applied for a Golden Fleece Award to enable her to develop and produce a new body of work for inclusion in her first solo exhibition at Gallery Marzee in The Netherlands in late 2024. Employing new material and techniques, objects and wearables will combine with sound and performance in immersive innovative ways within the gallery setting.
